The Benefits of Operating a Sludge Separator in Palm Oil Mill

High-Speed Sludge Separator is a continuous operating machine that recover the palm oil present in the sludge water from the underflow of a CST.

High-Speed Sludge Separator is a continuously operating machine that recover the palm oil present in the sludge water from the underflow of a continuous settling tank. Machines are equipped with nozzles for the continuous discharge of solids while the clarified liquid is discharged by a built-in centripetal pump. Separation is performed in a rotating bowl containing a stacked conical discs, and takes place in the space between each disc. The initial sludge water enters the bowl through a stationary feed pipe into a rotating distributor insert in the center of the bowl and then passes into the disc stack. Solids are continuously discharged through the nozzles and leaves the machine by gravity via an outlet in the frame. Water are forced towards the bowl wall where they are discharged under pressure through the centripetal pump. The concentrated oil is pumped out by a built-in centripetal pump as well. Should the oil and water content in the bowl move outwards, with the risk of oil being ejected together with the solids, water from the overhead balance tank will automatically enter the bowl and push the oil level back to the normal position.

HOW DOES A SEPARATOR WORK?
• Under the influence of the centrifugal forces, separation of the liquid mixture and /
or ejection of the solids particles takes place most rapidly.
• The specifically heavier components are displaced to the bowl periphery, whereas the
specifically lighter components are displaced towards the center of the bowl.
• The high centrifugal force is produced by high bowl speeds. On the one hand, high
bowl speeds produce high efficiency, while on the other hand, giving a high material
stressing on parts of the separator

THE FOUR MAIN SECTIONS
Centrifuge Separator features four main sections :
• Power transmission
• Frame parts
• Bowl
• Inlet Feed Pipe & Outlet Centripetal Pump

OPERATIONS ON THE SEPARATOR
• The separator works reliably, provided that it is operated and maintained in accordance with
our operating instructions.
• Special attention must be given to:
o Assembly
o Electrical installation
o Before start-up
o Start-up
o Shutting-down
o Maintenance and repair
• The separator, like anything else, is subject to wear. Corrosion, erosion and just ordinary wear due
to operation, all take their toll.
• To continue safe and efficient operation, certain parts require replacement based on its standard lifetime. Proper maintenance and operation will prolong parts life, and proper inspection will warn you when
replacement is necessary.
• If the parts of the machine are worn, eroded, or improperly assembled, the forces generated may
cause machine breakdown and injury to personnel. This can be avoided by proper maintenance of
the machine.

BOWL SPEED AND PRODUCT
• The max permissible bowl speed = 5400-5500 RPM
• The chemical and physical properties of the product:
o optimal temperature (>90⁰C , <100 ⁰C )
o density of the sludge (1 kg/dm3)
o the amount of sand particles found in sludge water determine the aggressiveness of the product as regards to corrosion and erosion

BENEFITS OF OPERATING A SLUDGE SEPARATOR
High centrifugal force in the separator leads to:
• Higher efficiency when reclaiming CPO = Light phase efficiency > 90%
• Low oil loses in solid discharge = 0.5%-0.8%
• Most of the Sludge Separator are equipped with a cleaning in place (CIP) system.
• Easy access to nozzle replacement
